Marine Litter

Plastic is light, durable and versatile material used in a number of applications.
Unfortunately it is treated as a cheap material with no value.  As a result a take - make - dispose model of waste management prevails in our society in which rubbish ends up mostly in lanfills. As a consequence a throwaway society started to grow and a proper management of plastics at their end-of life was ignored. Mismanaged plastic waste became a threat to the environment, wildlife and eventually can impact negatively human health. When not properly collected plastics can enter rivers and eventually seas and oceans. There are around 12.2 million tonnes of plastics per annum entering marine environment (Eunomia). The main source of this waste are coming from land based, coastal activities (around 9 million tonnes per annum, Eunomia) and include larger, everyday use plastic materials like bottles or containers.

Circular economy's aim is to capture back these materials and feed them back to the economy. Plastics recycling is an important element of Circular Economy and one of the most effcient ways of plastic waste management. By introducing separate collection and standardizing plastics sorting we can capture waste which is now entering the ecosystem and to produce new products. Plastics recycling provides a solution not only to marine litter but it helps as well to decrease green house gas emissions and to decrease our dependency on natural resources.
